12: Extension to Nicaragua
| Granada:
Granada, one of the most important cultural and natural
attractions of Nicaragua, is situated at the shore of
Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) and opposite of the impressive
volcano Mombacho. This city, which origns from Colonial
times, was founded by the Spanish conqueror in 1524.
It is doubtless one of the best locations to rest and
enjoy a very special atmosphere by exploring the past. |

Managua:
Managua city is situated within the Pacific "Ring
of Fire", a seismic and volcanic active zone.
The interaction between the tectonic plate not only
produces earthquakes but also has created a tectonic
depression and an active volcanic chain.
Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, is one of the most
seismically affected areas, since it is located over
a local fault system inside the Depression. Earthquakes
here can produce great damages, as indeed happened
both in 1931 and in 1972.

Masaya:
The center of Nicaragua's folk culture, Masaya (pop
75,000) is the spot for dancing, festivals, music and
handicrafts. Some of the craftwork is produced in the
city, but Masaya also serves as a market for goods produced
elsewhere in the country. The Mercado de Artesanías
should not be missed. In addition to exquisite
paintings, jewelry, leatherwork and ceramics, the market
offers hand-embroidered shirts, dresses and tapestries
and musical instruments. The hammocks for sale there
are the best in Central America - hand-knotted, very
colorful and very inexpensive.
To the west of masaya is the Masaya Volcano National
Park (Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya), which contains
three cones: masaya, Santiago and Nindiri. Santiago
and Nindiri are still active, offering views of smoke
and boiling mud. Masaya is 20 mi/30 km southeast
of Managua. |
